UGM’s Shower on Wheels

Bringing Dignity and Health to Our Neighbors in Need

Can you remember how good a shower feels after a long camping trip? Imagine not having access to a shower for weeks or even months…it’s hard to fathom for most of us. This is the reality that many of our homeless neighbors in Portland face.

Thanks to the generous donation from Jeff Shapiro, UGM is able to offer free showers to anyone who wants them twice a week. In addition, the shower trailer is also being used by the Open Door Day Center in Forest Grove Monday through Wednesday. The showers are in a custom-made, self-contained, portable trailer that has two shower stalls, a hot water heater, and a disinfectant system.

Providing regular access to showers for people can help reduce the risk of negative health impacts including body lice, fleas, head lice, and scabies. Studies have also shown that personal hygiene and showers can contribute to improved mental health. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5580630/

UGM’s shower trailer supplies our homeless neighbors with 15-20 showers a day. “I feel great,” says Robert, after taking his shower. “It’s just what I needed.” Showers are an important tool for good health and hygiene as well as a boost to one’s confidence and wellbeing.

We care about people’s health and wellbeing by providing showers. We assist with getting them the services they need, such as health care, mental health services, and drug and alcohol treatment. Our goal is to address the root cause of their homelessness and to coach them to a path off of the streets.

We can use your help, UGM is seeking volunteers who can commit to helping at least two shifts a month. Friday shifts are at 3 NW Third Avenue, 8:30 am to 11 am and 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Saturday shifts are at 9715 SE Powell Blvd, 9:30 am to 1 pm and 12:30 pm to 4 pm. Or, you can make a donation at ugmportland.org/donate
