Curtis is a regular at volunteer in Union Gospel Mission's homeless services day room.  On most days, Union Gospel Mission's homeless guests can come in to enjoy coffee, a snack or lunch. Curtis can be found greeting guests at the front door, handing out snacks or a variety of other duties to keep the day room running smoothly.

"When I retired I was looking for an opportunity. Some in my family had been touched by addiction, so I looked at the Mission."

Curtis started volunteering and he says, "I fell in love with the place."

He started to get to know the men in the LifeChange recovery program who regularly work in the homeless day room as well as the guests.  He says working with the men makes volunteering a fun experience.

"Everyone needs to see a smiling face. Everyone needs warmth, that's how I like to connect here. I like to be at the front door."

Curtis has advice for potential volunteers, "I recommend spending time somewhere first. This experience isn't for everyone, but I know volunteering here is right for me and makes me feel good."
