Running and Walking for Change

Last week, Portland Running Company started a running and walking group at Union Gospel Mission. Owner Paula Harkin, with husband Dave, of Portland Running Company has started many running clubs around the Portland metro area. Paula took an immediate interest in starting a running and walking club at the mission after she had volunteered at a radiothon the mission held. Paula had two objectives for starting a running and walking club at Union Gospel Mission.

The group takes a photo at the corner of Burnside and Third Ave.

  • Build community through running with the men's LifeChange residents, staff, volunteers, the homeless community, and people from her running circles
  • Help address Union Gospel Mission's statement of restoring the addict by promoting good health via running or walking

With group support, the runners and walkers can set their own goals to improve their times, health and weight with Paula at the helm. As a long term goal, Paula hopes some of the runners will eventually reach a point and eagerly participate in competitive runs in the area.

If you would like to join by either running or walking, the club meets every Monday at noon in the sanctuary. The route runs along the waterfront to the Hawthorne Bridge looping all the way to the Steel Bridge back to the mission.
