Operation Overcoat is Coming! Mark your Calendars for September 26

oo 14 food3 tallUnion Gospel Mission's largest single day of service is coming up soon! Last year, Union Gospel Mission provided over 6,000 articles of clothing, provided 1,345 barbeque meals and much more. For Operation Overcoat, Union Gospel Mission blocks off NW Third Avenue between Burnside and Couch streets and blocks off Couch Street between Third and Fourth avenues. Tents for coats, pants, shirts, socks and underwear, shoes and boots, and hygiene kits are set-up. Volunteers set up and grill hamburgers and hot dogs and help guests with their meals. Operation Overcoat has clothing items for men, women and children. There is a main stage for live music throughout the event.  We also partner with Medical Teams International, they bring their Mobile Dental Van to provide free dental care to guests.  We partner with local hairstylists that provide free haircuts during Operation Overcoat.  In addition to the meal, guests can enjoy treats such as shaved ice, cotton candy and more. As you can see, it's a big day with lots of activities. It takes many people to make this event possible. We need your help!

Here are a few things you can do:

Volunteer: We need about 200 more volunteers for this event! The volunteer shift with the greatest need is the 11:00 am - 2:00 pm shift. Operation Overcoat is a great group volunteering experience for your family, church, workplace or school. The more the merrier! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Bernadette Gonzales at bernadetteg@ugmportland.org or call 503-274-4483.

Sleeping Bags: Our most needed item right now is sleeping bags. We have a very easy way to donate sleeping bags right from your computer keyboard. Go to Union Gospel Mission's Amazon Wishlist and choose a sleeping bag(s) to donate. The sleeping bags will ship directly to Union Gospel Mission.  Put your name and address on the gift note if you would like a receipt from Union Gospel Mission. If you would like to drop off sleeping bags you can do that as well at 3 NW Third (corner of 3rd and Burnside) in downtown Portland.

Start Your Own Operation Overcoat Drive:   Starting your own drive at your church or workplace would be a great way to help out! Here are some pdf file resources to help you publicize your drive: opovDONATE poster15 opover flyer15 - You can download the poster and flyer and print them off to help promote your drive. The flyer is a standard size sheet with two flyers per sheet. The poster is tabloid sized that you can print at Fed Ex/Kinkos for around $2 in full color. David Willis, our Homeless Services Coordinator, is your contact for questions and the person to contact when you are ready to drop off your collected items.
