Hot breakfast for the homeless
About three months ago, Union Gospel Mission noticed an increased demand for meals and started a weekly breakfast service. The breakfast meal was immediately very popular with the homeless and people in need. At 6:30 am a line for the breakfast meal snakes around the corner at NW Third Avenue and Couch Street.
The meals are very high quality, for instance today's breakfast featured biscuits and gravy, hash browns, scrambled eggs and fruit. (see the picture at right from this morning- yum!)
The meals are made possible by generous donors and special support from Food 4 Less, Alpenrose Dairy and many others who have donated food or provided items at cost.
The weather is getting colder, so we fully expect to see more and more people in line on Friday mornings.
Union Gospel Mission overall is experiencing a fairly dramatic increase in demand for meals. Every weekday the Mission distributes sack lunches, a daily snack table, a hot lunch at 2:00 pm and a hot dinner and chapel service every weeknight at 7:15 pm.
This Friday morning Union Gospel Mission served 128 meals to guests who came to our doors.
