Development Assistant

Location: 3 NW Third Avenue, Portland OR 97209

Reports to: Development Director

Employment Status: Full time - Salaried (exempt)

Effective Date: Fall 2018


The Union Gospel Mission development assistant works as part of the development team to administrate, plan, organize, manage, and measure all development functions, including special events, grant writing, communications, major gifts, volunteer coordination and other functions as assigned by the development director. This role includes supporting these positions; Director of Development, development staff, communications manager, volunteer director and other departments as needed.


1.       Assist the development director and development department with all development functions including planning setting strategies, creating budgets, and creating and executing campaigns, including Operation Overcoat, Love Your Neighbor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter campaigns.

2.       Assist with writing, editing, research, reporting, data management and measurement.

3.       Assist with communications functions including social media, press releases, radio-thons and telethons.

4.       Plan, coordinate and manage development special events, including dinners, and small group events.

5.       Coordinate and manage grant writing including grant research, writing, editing and reporting.

6.       Assist with volunteer management.

7.       Be competent and confident in using Raiser’s Edge and other UGM technology.

8.       To perform other duties as assigned by the development office. 



Character: Strong commitment to Union Gospel Mission’s mission, have a passion for the gospel, and a desire to serve the homeless, broken, addicted and needy. Must like a fast paced environment with a variety of duties. Must be self-motivated, highly organized and likes to work with people. Must have strong computer skills, able to write and edit, and wants to be part of a team.

Experience:  Previous employment in the non-profit sector preferred, previous experience in grant writing or related field preferred, must have minimum of a bachelor’s degree, skilled writing capabilities, organizational skills, excellent technical abilities ( i.e.: social media, Microsoft office, etc.), and proven people skills.

Kitchen Coordinator


REPORTS TO:   Lead Kitchen Coordinator


Work together as a team preparing nutritious meals in a clean, Christ like environment. This is a thirty hour a week position.


1.      Prepare and serve meals.

2.      Organize and maintain food storage and cleanliness of work areas

3.      Train and supervise residents and volunteers working in the kitchen/dining area.

4.      Monitor safety of all residents and volunteers.

5.      Plan, purchasing supplies and supervise job duties to ensure the kitchen is running smoothly and peacefully.

6.      Demonstrate good use of donated food items.

7.      Work as part of a team in the grace based ministry, confronting behaviors and leading to self-evaluate choices.

8.      Able to mentor the women and their children in daily living

9.      Help to maintain a safe healing environment for all residents, staff and volunteers.



  • Direct service experience working in the preparation of food services

  • Work cooperatively as a team with other UGM personnel

  • Experience working with diverse population

  • Must have a strong love for the Lord and for people

  • Ability to work independently

  • Valid OSDL and food handler’s permit

  • Participate in UGM events and meetings, as requested

  • Help create and maintain a positive Christian work atmosphere

  • Assist with any duties as needed and assigned by Director
